Its November and dry cold days are the norm now. The ranch is dry yet
I had noticed that a large area south of the big water fall seemed to
Be always a little wetter and more animals are always in this wide
open area. I had decided to go into this large area and take a look.
On this trip Mike and I parked as far in as we could but it still left
a large area of mesa's, buttes and gorges. It is rough country from the
car to Preitta mesa. We started with full packs and forged the canyon
walls filled with the ancient mud balls and ammonites. This area was wet
with standing water in the gorges. All of the water came from two falls
on the side of Preitta. In the distance on an open stretch of the
mesa area you could see the remains of an ancient village that had been
disturbed by some past archeologist.
This was a ruin of several room once of which had been excavated as you
can see.
Mike noticed that there was a special white rock with an ultra fine finish
that was some kind of grinding surface. Later he found the grinder that had
been used on this rock.
I on the other hand was exhausted from the hike and climb that required us
to get on all fours at times and climb through the trees and rocks.
There is pottery chards everywhere around this site. Where it is usual
To find it on the south east corner of the building this time the chards
Were all over the north east side. I speculate that there is another
ruin deeper to the north. Mike and I started for the two water falls to
look for petroglyphs. Once in the area it was clear that there were no
need for petroglyphs. There was game everywhere as well as water. And
sure enough we found only one petroglyph. A very strange one. For one
thing there were no others. Two it was almost hidden in its placement on the
rock. Three it depicted a person on horse back probably a conquistador.
You tell us what you think?.
Yet another mystery!
