TO TABLE OF CONTENTS
In the Rio West area below Rio Ranch just south of the king ranch lies
Lobo Canyon. When the two wells were sunk and water found (7,000) feet
And the housing boom was on, the ranchers had to vacate the grazing herds
and make room for the coming 70,000 houses. The housing bust came and
the whole thing went into bankruptcy in Sandoval. The wells are now the
property of the county and it is a ghost area. They built a new road to
get the heavy equipment down to the two wells. This is the entry off
60th st and what would have been the extension of Iris road 1.8 miles
north of northern blvd.
As you drive over the crest of the escarpment you get a great view of the King
ranch on the right with Mesa Preita and Rio West area with Mesa felipe table
mesa in center of the road.
Recently the road was expanded to cut thru a hill leading to lobo canyon.
This hill has some cretaceous outcrops and would reveal this as the hill was cut thru.
The hill vista to lobo canyon and the Laugana area.
As I anticipated the presence of large cepterian nodules would present them selves.
The theory behind these nodules is that a giant inland see was in this location.
This is obvious from the shells and fossils present. When a creature would die
and fall to the bottom it would be rolled by the current. Each roll would pick
up some sticky clay that would snowball as the nodule would roll. It would also
pick up other shelled creatures and pack them into the ball tightly until shells
parts would become veins of crystals as you can see below.
So Mike the photographer and myself are here to pick some up. And there
were many to have.
Nearby was one of the outcrops to be explored.
Yes that is a rock balanced on top!
On top are sandstone formations like a moonscape.
From here you can see the number two well on the canyon floor.
Just visible over the next hill are the remains of a habitant and round up
area of days gone by.
The remains of several buildings of somewhat different origins can be seen.
Old anastazi shaped rocks can be seen later used by pueblo type construction
and then reformatted to a cowboy building.
It looks like the hillside came down and flooded the final building
causing abandonment.
